Fruit of the Spirit-Love

Galatians 5:16-26

Walking in the spirit

Ga 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Spiritual Warfare

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Works of the flesh

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Fruits of the spirit

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

…fruit of the Spirit….

Fruit:  fruit (as plucked), literally or figuratively:–fruit.

of the Spirit:  (divine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy Spirit:–ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind

The Fruit of the Spirit is:

  1. Love
  2. Joy
  3. Peace
  4. Longsuffering
  5. Gentleness
  6. Goodness
  7. Faith
  8. Meekness
  9. Temperence

…..against such there is no law.

  1. Love

What is Love?

Is Love primarily a feeling or is it something deeper than that?

There are two Greek words used for Love: Agapao and Philio

agapao means: to love dearly, to be well pleased

philio refers to a fondness or friendship

Love is foundational to Christianity.

Love has many different aspects.

Quote: Faith, like light, should always be simple and unbending; while love, like warmth, should beam forth on every side, and bend to every necessity of our brethren.

God is Love

1John 4:7 ¶ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Love is not complete without giving

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1John 3:17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Genuine Love is giving without any expectation of personal gain.

Quote: You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.

How important is Love?

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Love is the only badge of disipleship that the world recognizes.

Genuine Love is the most important quality that we can possess. Every other quality must be motivated by it.

1Corinthians 13

1 ¶ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

All that I do is in vain if it is done without LOVE.

What is True, Genuine Love?

4 ¶ Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, {vaunteth…: or, is not rash}

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; {in the truth: or, with the truth}

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 ¶ Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. {fail: Gr. vanish away}

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. {done away: Gr. vanish away}

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. {thought: or, reasoned} {put away: Gr. vanish away}

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. {darkly: Gr. in a riddle}

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

11 points of what Love is………..

  1. Love suffereth long.
  2. Love is kind.
  3. Loveenviethnot.
  4. Lovevauntethnot itself.
  5. Love is not puffed up.
  6. Love doth not behave itself unseemly.
  7. Loveseekethnot her own.
  8. Love is not easily provoked.
  9. Love thinketh no evil.
  10. Love rejoices not in iniquity.
  11. Love rejoices in the truth.

The Greatest commandment ever given is to____________________________________.

Romans 5:1 ¶ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

ashamed: to shame down, i.e. disgrace or (by implication) put to the blush:–confound, dishonour, (be a-, make a-)shame(-d).

One of the worlds worst tragedies is that we allow out hearts to shrink until there is room in them for little besides ourselves.

What is true Love?

Love is a genuine commitment to follow the Lord with a pure heart……..not for my own benefit, but to bring glory to Him in all things.
