The Lord’s Prayer

 Matthew 6:9-13

After this manner therefore pray ye:

-Christ was setting an example here for us, as we pray

“Our Father” which art in heaven

-God is the creator of all men

-Spiritually, God is the Father of the believers only….all who have been justified by faith.

-We come before Him in reverence because of who he is

-He is all powerful…..the Ruler of the universe

“Hallowed be thy Name”

-When we pray: hallowed be thy name, we are saying that the whole deity of his vastness must be glorified and honored

-As Believers, our aim and purpose in life is that the name of God would be glorified

“Thy Kingdom come”

-A petition that the name of God might be glorified by all men

-A petition that all Men would come to salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord

Luke 17:20 ¶ And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: {with…: or, with outward shew}

21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

-If the kingdom of God is within us, then Christ also dwells in us, and He gives us grace to meditate and pray that His eternal kingdom may come, the kingdom of His Glory in Heaven.

“Thy will be done in earth as it is in Heaven”

-This is a result of Christ dwelling in us.

-We are willing to do his will out of pure love and not out of mere obligation (as the angels are doing his will in heaven)

“Give us this day our daily bread”

-(Our) this also includes our fellow men

-Having our needs supplied is a gift from God

-The spiritual body has need of the bread of life daily as well as or natural body has need of the natural food.

-Do we daily feast on the spiritual food?

“And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”

-Our sin has become our debt

-The word “forgive” means to release a debt and to grant a pardon by grace

-When we recieve forgiveness for our sins, we are also granted the inheritance with them that are santified through faith in Him. Sin has lost its power and can no longer reign over us if we abide in Him.

-Our sins will be forgiven in the same measure that we forgive the trespasses of others against us.

“And lead us not into temptation”

-The word temptation means to give trial or tests, or enticement to sin

-Once a man is enticed and drawn away by his own lust, temptation starts. If he does not resist, temptation overtakes him

-We should pray, Keep is from temptation or keep us safe from temptation

“But deliver us from evil”

-Anything that is harmful to the soul

-We should pray for protection from evil and the evil one

“For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory forever.”  Amen
